A project to install or improve 13 pedestrian crossings across Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt was completed in mid 2024.
Following concerns about pedestrian safety and accessibility challenges, engagement with communities identified the points where new or improved crossing would make the greatest impact and encourage active modes of transport such as walking, cycling and scootering.
Locations for new or improved crossings were chosen based on areas:
- with high foot traffic (near to schools, public transport, new housing and other community facilities)
- with current road conditions which create significant safety challenges for pedestrians such as high speeds and congested traffic
- that have received multiple requests/enquiries from members of public
- where previous incidents or near misses have already occurred.
Raised crossings are a physical reminder for drivers to slow down and provide a level surface for crossing, reducing obstacles that can pose challenges to people using mobility devices.
The crossings were part funded by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi as part of the National Land Transport Fund.
