Hutt City Council is now considering public input as it plans carparking changes in the Naenae town centre to accommodate the new pool, community centre and park.

A close look at Naenae carparking is needed because the Te Mako Community Centre has just opened, the new Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre – expecting 450,000 visitors annually – will open later this year, and Walter Mildenhall Park is set to transform into a destination park for the people.

The council received 172 public submissions on Everest Ave/Naenae Pool and Fitness Centre Parking through the Have Your Say survey up to its closing on 19 July.

Key feedback themes, from users, business owners and retailers, included the availability of parking, the number of family, mobility, and electric vehicle parks, as well as specific areas for cycles.

Council’s Head of Transport Paul Hewitt says the new amenities are at the heart of the Whakatupu Ngaengae Project to revitalise Naenae.

“Collectively they will contribute to a big change in traffic patterns and we need to ensure everyone who uses the pool or the town centre businesses and services continues to have options for parking nearby.  We know convenient parking will contribute to making the town centre a well-used, vibrant focal point for the community.”

The proposed Naenae parking includes:

  • 254 parking spaces (including 13 mobility spaces) within two minutes, or 150-metres walking distance, to the pool
  • 500 parking spaces within five minutes walking distance including:
    • 262 parking spaces with time restrictions of 60 or 120 minutes, shared with town centre commercial activities
    • 91 spaces on nearby streets, including Treadwell, Vogel and Rata streets.
  • Hundreds more parking spaces further south within 10-minutes walking distance through relatively low-volume residential streets.

Council’s Transport Subcommittee will consider the public feedback as part of its deliberations on the future of Naenae parking in late August.
