More than 2000 cans of food or dried goods was delivered to the Lower Hutt and Stokes Valley Foodbanks thanks to an annual gym membership scheme – called Can Deal – at two Council-owned gyms.
Throughout December 2023 and January 2024, prospective gym members at Huia Pool + Fitness and Stokes Valley Pool + Fitness could get 12-week gym and pool membership for half price – so long as they donated eight cans of food or non-perishable foodstuffs. 270 people accepted the offer.
Council Head of Aquatics Iain Brown says while Council has a long-term focus on kai resilience and ensuring everyone has equitable access to healthy and affordable food, they also recognise there is an immediate, daily need in our community.
“It really was fantastic to see so many people taking care of themselves with a gym membership while also taking care of people in their community.”
The Can Deal has been offered over the past few years but this year it took off with what is thought to be a record number of people taking advantage of the offer.
“There does seem to be strong understanding that the cost-of-living crisis is severely impacting those who need a helping hand to get by. We are thrilled to have played a small part in that.”
Mr Brown says there is much more to both facilities than breaking a sweat in the gym or notching up laps in the pool.
“We provide a place for people to meet, have fun, and feel connected. Can Deal is another way for us to collaborate with the community. It’s been a rewarding exercise for us.”
Lower Hutt Foodbank Service Coordinator Jane Wenmoth says public donations of food and money are what allows them to keep functioning.
“We don’t get any Government funding so we are grateful for donations, no matter how small or large. I know it’s gratefully received by our customers as well. Thank you to everyone who donated.”
