Five Lower Hutt residents received Civic Honours Awards at the Lower Hutt Volunteer Awards last night. The Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards winners were also announced at the same event.
The awards were held last night at the Lower Hutt Town Hall. They celebrate Lower Hutt’s unsung heroes - those who work tirelessly in service of their community.
The five Civic Honour recipients received their awards for exceptional voluntary service in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt. They are:
Juliet Clare for Community Service
Sharyn Horn for Community Service
Iris Kauffeld for Cultural Affairs
Dr Graeme Lyon for Environmental
Lillian Pak for Community Service
Mayor Campbell Barry says the recipients have made significant and long-standing contributions to our communities.
“Their contributions, often made quietly behind the scenes, reminds us that real change happens when ordinary people step up to do extraordinary things,” he says.
“It's an honour to shine a light on their incredible mahi and thank both the honourees, their friends and whānau for their efforts.”
On the night, Mayor Barry received a surprise invitation to perform on stage with the Hutt Valley Ukelele Orchestra, which provided plenty of smiles.
Established in 1976, the Civic Honours have since recognised the efforts of 269 individuals who have gone above and beyond for the city. They highlight those who embody the spirit of selflessness and service.
The Wellington Airport Regional Community awards were also presented.
They recognise the service provided by volunteer community groups across six categories, celebrating their collective contributions to society, with a winner and runner-up announced for each category.
“Volunteers are a driving force behind positive change in our city. In their own ways, they’ve helped build a stronger, more vibrant community in Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt,” says Mayor Barry.
MIRO was selected as this year’s Supreme Award winner. The Supreme Award winner and category winners will go forward to represent Hutt City in the Regional Community Awards. The Rising Star Award was presented to He Puāwai Trust.
Wellington Airport chief executive Matt Clarke said the airport was proud to celebrate the outstanding work of community groups in Hutt City over the previous 12 months.
“These groups do amazing and selfless work to help others in the community and thoroughly deserve recognition for this,” he says.
“This year is extra special given we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary of these awards.
