Lower Hutt is one of the most culturally diverse cities in Aotearoa which makes it a natural fit to host Welcoming Week — Te Wiki o Manaaki from 6 to 15 September.
Launched in 2012, Welcoming Week provides an opportunity to roll out the welcoming mat to celebrate the things that unite us.
No matter what language we speak or where we were born, this is a week for Lower Hutt to celebrate our welcoming values through local events and initiatives that foster mutual understanding, stronger connections, and deeper belonging among all of us. At Hutt City Council, we are proud to be part of this important initiative.
Most of us have experienced being new to a place, whether it’s a new city, neighbourhood, school, or workplace. We know what it’s like to belong somewhere — because we know how it feels to not belong.
Deputy Mayor Tui Lewis says for many newcomers to this country, the feeling of 'not belonging' can cast a long shadow.
"Coming together to celebrate cultures through food, dance, music and storytelling is a wonderful way to become united whilst remembering cultural roots that make people who they are. It fosters understanding and acceptance."
Events are the heart and soul of Welcoming Week. Check out these events below and join in on the fun.
