What happened
Heavy rain in August 2022 caused a landslide at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill before the Pukeatua pedestrian bridge, resulting in lane closures along Wainuiomata Road. Concrete barriers and temporary speeds were installed at the base of the slope as an interim measure until funding and plans could be approved to remediate the site.
What we’re doing
Physical works to repair the landslide at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill started on Monday 27 May.
Remediation involves first removing vegetation and loose materials from the slope before it can be stabilised by installing anchored steel mesh. The last step will be hydroseeding to encourage revegetation on the slope.
The works are expected to take three months to complete, subject to weather. Once completed the works will reduce the risk of future slips in this area, ensuring a more resilient road for the Wainuiomata community.
Traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works and we acknowledge that there will be some traffic delays for people leaving Wainuiomata. We’ll be working with our contractors to get the work done as quickly as possible to minimise the disruption and appreciate the patience and cooperation of Wainuiomata community.

Traffic management update
With the wet weather delays we’ve had lately, the team will be working on Saturday 17 August. This means the single lane closure will be in place on Saturday from 7:30am-4:30pm in addition to the traffic management from 9am on weekdays.
Traffic continues to flow smoothly through the work area. We'll continue to monitor traffic throughout the works.
Traffic impacts
Traffic management will be in place from 9am on weekdays, with one lane available at a reduced speed limit for road users leaving Wainuiomata. Hours may change as we monitor traffic, if things don't ease up by 9am we may wait to install traffic management. Two lanes will be available outside work hours. There may also be occasions where Saturday works are required.
Drivers travelling out of Wainuiomata during the day are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journey.
