What you can find in the archives
The Hutt City Council Archives contain information and records on the history of the Council and its activities across Lower Hutt.
The collection includes documents, images, plans, including:
- rate books
- property valuation records
- maps and plans
- building records
- aerial photographs
- town planning information.
The Archives hold records of many Lower Hutt based boards and authorities including:
- minute books
- correspondence records
- images from Council activities.
Note: While the Council archive contains a wide range of information, there may be instances where we don’t hold information. This may be due to those records not being retained historically, or due to adverse events. For instance, a 1985 fire destroyed many Petone Borough Council records, including property information.

How to search the Hutt City Archives
Many of the items in the Archives have been digitised so you can view them by searching the online database.

- Tell us what you're trying to find, along with your contact details.
- We'll be in touch and will let you know when to expect the information you’ve asked for.
You might have to pay a fee if the search for your information will take longer than an hour.
Note: Sometimes information is restricted and can't be released due to the Privacy Act 2020 or other legislation.

Reproduction Fees
Reproductions are provided as high quality scanned images via email. Reproductions are subject to the physical condition, type of item and any copyright conditions.
