"We stand at a turning point - how do we, as a city, honour our past, but adapt for the future?" Mayor Campbell Barry
On this page you'll learn all about the development of Lower Hutt's City Strategy. You'll have access to important resources and you can sign up to join the community of people taking part in the conversation about the future of Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt.
Te Awa Kairangi ki Tai Lower Hutt is Aotearoa New Zealand's sixth most populous city, home to one of the most diverse populations in the country. We have a rich history of Māori settlement and early European pioneers. Lower Hutt has always been known for our beautiful natural environment as well as making our mark as an important residential, commercial and industrial centre for the Wellington region. We want to harness this past success to help shape our future.
Like other cities around the world, we're now facing significant challenges, including climate change, an ageing population, failing water infrastructure and increasingly unaffordable housing. These challenges require a coordinated, long-term response.
Creating a city strategy is an opportunity for us to work together to create a plan that will produce a vision for our city’s future. A document that will reflect the voices and aspirations of our people and outline shared goals we can work towards together.
"I'm optimistic for the future. We have a great awareness and a city of capable people who want to enact change and collaborate. There are challenges, but the kōrero has begun!" Attendee, City Summit 2024

We’re facing challenges that can’t be solved by one organisation alone, this is not a Council strategy but a city strategy. Through shared knowledge and collective action we can turn our challenges into opportunities.
A thriving city doesn’t just look like economic growth, lots of people or flash new infrastructure. It’s a city where its people feel valued,” Huliana Whonu Fanau, WelTec student and former Head Girl of Naenae College, guest speaker City Summit 2024
"Our history is not just a record of what has been; it is our greatest guide to what must come.
