Before you make an application
Before you apply for a trade waste consent, we recommend that you speak to us first. You may need us to inspect the premises before you make an application. Talking to us first may identify any potential issues and additional requirements such as amended drainage plans.
Not all sites require consent. Some smaller premises, such as those that have just obtained Code of Compliance for a relevant building consent, can obtain the discharge consent within one month of opening rather than needing to gain consent prior to opening. Again, we recommend that you speak to us first.

Make an application
- When you are ready to make an application, you will need to fill in one of the following application forms:
For complex sites use the Application for a Consent to Discharge Trade Waste (PDF 105kb)
For non-complex sites such as retail food businesses use Application for Trade Waste Licence or Registration (PDF 109kb)
- If a discharge consent is required then we will inspect your premises so we can confirm the appropriate category for the consent and identify any issues to be addressed
- You will then be sent an invoice for the consent fee
Once the application is processed and the fee paid, the discharge consent and its associated consent conditions will be sent to you.
Renewal of trade waste discharge consent
To help you renew your existing registration, each year we will send out an invoice and application form with details already filled in. Please note any changes on the form, sign it, and return it either with the payment or separately if electronic payment is made. A new discharge consent will be sent out when we have received your application fee.
How long will it take?
Please ask us how long it is likely to take to process your application, as this can vary depending upon your situation and requirements. However, most applications are processed within a week of application and most consents are issued within a week of payment.
Those applications involving building work will not be fully processed until after the works are complete and we have inspected the finished premises.
How much does it cost?
Costs will vary between different categories. With complex new premises an application fee may be charged. Please note that minor dischargers do not usually incur user charger fees, ie the majority of premises only pay a consent fee and that fee varies with the risk their discharge and site management practices create. The greater the risk to Council systems, then the higher the fee.
