Dog owners are entitled to exercise dogs off the lead in dog exercise areas (map PDF 150kb), although dog owners are required by law to still carry a leash while their dog runs free. The dog must be kept under continuous supervision and control at all times.

If a dog defecates in a public place, the person having the control of the dog must immediately remove the faeces.

Dog pooh bags are available from veterinary clinics and pet shops in Hutt City, however, persons registering new dogs receive a pack of dog litter bags.

The following areas (excluding playgrounds and sportsfields) are designated as dog exercise areas under The Hutt City Council Dog Control Bylaw 2005 - Part 8 and 8A
