New Zealand has seven active volcano centres, all in the North Island. Although the Wellington region is several hundred kilometres south of the nearest volcano, it could still be significantly affected by an eruption, depending on the level of activity and weather patterns at the time. Work, holidays or other commitments may place you much closer to volcanic activity than usual so prior knowledge and awareness of volcanic hazards is important.
Move away from the eruption as quickly as possible.
Keep well above the shoreline of large lakes and avoid streams or rivers.
Avoid sheltering in confined spaces or buildings with low pitched roofs.
If going outside, cover head and body with substantial clothing.
Breathe through a wet cloth, wear goggles and carry a torch.
Protect your water supply from falling ash.
Monitor radio broadcasts and follow any advice or instructions.
