Cyclones can produce very heavy rainfall, fierce winds or both, and can inflict significant disruption and damage. The last significant storm in the Wellington region was Cyclone Giselle in 1968 (better known as the Wahine storm). Historically, Eastbourne has been isolated by road closures in very severe storm conditions. Fortunately, the national meteorological service is always able to provide forecasts and warnings of impending storms.
