In an emergency dial 111. You will be asked for the service that you want: Police, Fire or Ambulance. Tell the operator the service you require (for example: FIRE) and stay on the telephone. You need to be able to tell the operator:
• the address or name of the place from which you are calling;
• the phone number from which you are calling;
• what has happened.

Lower Hutt is located on or near several major earthquake fault lines. New Zealand has many fault lines and earthquake shaking can impact on regions hundreds of kilometres away.
Lower Hutt is also at risk of other natural hazards such as flooding, storms, tsunamis and wild fires. In the event of an emergency you will need to look after yourself for at least three days before the emergency services can reach you. Make sure that you have enough water and food stored for you and your family to be able to survive for a minimum of three days.
