Eastbourne Petone Community Coast Care Project

The community coast care project brings together the vision, effort and concerns of many individuals and groups who care about our coastline from Korokoro to Fitzroy Bay.

Initiated to support volunteers working on dune restoration, the project has collated observations and feedback from all beach users.

Community Action plans have been agreed with Council's reserves manager and adjustments in beach management started already.  Click on the links below to download the one page plans:

A summary report on coastal processes affecting Petone beach has been prepared by geomorphologist Jim Dahm. Click here to see the recommendations or to link to a downloadable copy.

The Eastbourne report will be available soon.

The first round of Your Beach - Your Say public meetings was held in November 2007.  The second series of meetings was held in June 2008, with a third Eastbourne meeting held in August 2008.

Research to record changes to beach profiles in planted areas is also being funded.  Dunes can be an effective buffer against erosion caused by storms or projected sea level rise.

The project is funded for three years by Ministry for the Environment, and is supported by Hutt City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council, with considerable input from Friends of Petone Beach and Eastbourne Dunes Protection Group. Supporters include Eastbourne Community Board and East Harbour Environmental Association.
